Lake Shoreline

This is the sound of the lake shore at Milwaukee, south of the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee campus.

This was recorded five feet out in the water (in FREEZING water, by the way) with both mics only a few inches from the highest crescent.

Parking Garage

This is ambience of the Whole Foods Parking Garage. It's a large garage with automatic doors leading to an escalator (and home to a large cache of carts).

The elevator music you could hear from the store above struck me as interesting; I wanted to take that opportunity.

Fountain Drink Machine

This was caught the second day of recording - which was commenced with the consumption of a burger! Half way through my #7 Crispy, I realized that I have been blocking out the sound of the fountain drink machine I was sitting next to for the past seven minutes.

I believe that all Americans can identify with this sound (some may even by comforted by it). The next person that walked up for a refill got a cup full of microphones - but the fizzing sound was worth it.

Fountain

There was a detail that struck me about this fountain: it rained earlier in the week, causing an excess of water to collect in the fountain. It was filled level with the cement edge, giving little room for the jets to expel the water. This created a small wave/ripple effect with the mass of water. When the water level went up in the middle, the jets were clogged - but then the water level would rise on the edges (leaving the middle clear) to have yet more water added to the bowl of the fountain.

The rhythm was almost hypnotic. Also, note that the grate/vent controlling the fountain can faintly be heard towards the end of the track (we went ahead and recorded that, too - but it will not be included in this blog).

Bike Trail

I wanted to test the stereo quality of these microphones, so I crossed this bridge and hung them five (-ish) feet apart, dangling them to the bike trail below. There is a good mix of natural sounds (from the small woods area to the left), bicyclist sounds (from below) and traffic sounds (from behind). I find it tranquil, to tell the truth.
